The first place we went was Caeserea, a beautiful seaside ancient city. In the past it was an important port city, but has been through many transitions over the years. We learned about the magnificent palace build by King Herod and the life of Roman rulers, and could still see uncovered ruins that outline the city. We had morning devotions in the amphitheater and saw the entertainment arena.
After that we went to Mount Carmel where Elijah had a showdown with the prophets of Baal. From the top of the church built on the site, we could see 1/3 of all of Israel. It was an amazing view!
After lunch we went to Armageddon/Megiddo. Our guide, David, gave us a better appreciation for the geography of the land looking onto the plains where thousands of battles have been fought and where the Final Battle described in Revelations is to take place. From our view point we could see how the valley of Jezreel had been a major battle zone because it was a major crossroads for Asia, Africa, and Europe. We walked through ruins of an ancient city that had been build, torn down, and rebuild many times. Finally, we went through an underground waterway that kept the city safe through times of siege.
In Nazareth, Jesus' boyhood home, we visited the Church of the Annunciation where the angel visited Mary. After this busy day we were exhausted! Many people remarked that after one day it felt like a week already. We spent the night in Tiberius, next to the Sea of Galilee.
